The Aerie Magazine Program includes two upper level creative writing classes that each produce an annual literary arts magazine. Aerie Big Sky is a collection of art, writing, and photography by students within our school. Aerie International accepts submissions from high school youth anywhere in the world. What makes these journals unique is that they are designed, edited and published entirely by high school students.
However, Aerie is much more than two classes or the literary magazines they produce. The collective group of Aerie students are proud to be a strong writing community with a focus on activism. Aerie hosts community events throughout the year including a citywide poetry slam and a formal fundraising reading that spotlights work by our international submitters. However, Aerie's community presence doesn't stop at the events they plan and host. These students are a regular presence at readings and slams hosted by other venues in our community. They teach workshops on topics like slam poetry and revision for community groups, other high school English classes, and even younger grades. They look forward to expanding this and traveling to other communities. They dream of attending slams or readings outside of Montana. The Aerie Magazine Program was born of a desire to offer outstanding young writers and artists an opportunity to share, edit, and publish their work within their school and community and internationally.
