‘Canes On Da Mic Poetry Club

‘Canes On Da Mic is a family. Plain and simple; a blended family to be exact. Though a fairly new organization, CODM packs a punch. It is run out of Gainesville High School in Gainesville, FL as an after school club. This organization was bred out of a second year teacher’s passion for engaging young people in art. Nicole Harris traveled and performed with a Spoken Word Theater troupe in Miami (Word Poet Troupe) before she moved away to teach high school English. During her time teaching English, she saw that there were students who expressed a desire to do what she did but there was nothing like it for teens in the North Florida area. Ms. Harris, as she is called at Gainesville High School, wanted students in this region to have the same outlet and artistic opportunities as those in bigger cities. The results were surprising. About 15 dedicated teen poets showed up weekly to write, share, do poetry exercises and give constructive feedback to their peers. Most students were content just coming to Ms. Harris’s room week to week to write and share but things quickly grew beyond what anyone imagined. CODM won Club of the Year and partnered with various University of Florida departments in its first year.

Service and breaking down social barriers have become the main principles of this club. 'Canes On Da Mic Poetry Club is dedicated to free and open creative expression of young minds. We tap into youthful energy to share their ideas with the world. This is a no judgement zone. Whether students have loved to write since they were a kid or just interested in starting, all are welcomed!
