Literary Arts

Founded in 1984, Literary Arts is a community-based nonprofit literary organization dedicated to serving Oregon’s readers and writers. Our programs include Portland Arts & Lectures, one of the country’s largest lecture series; Oregon Book Awards & Fellowships, which celebrates Oregon’s writers and independent publishers; Writers in the Schools, which hires professional writers to teach semester-long creative writing workshops in Portland’s public high schools; and Wordstock: Portland’s Book Festival, which builds community around literature through author events, workshops, a book fair, and more. We also host guided discussion groups around great works of literature through a program called Delve.

Youth Programs at Literary Arts inspire public high school students to write, revise, edit, publish, and perform their own creative writing, and are designed to best support the developmental needs of youth. Our programming reinforces the real world importance of reading and writing in all professions, is designed to meet state and national standards for the arts and language arts (reading, writing, speaking and listening), and helps schools reach their goals of teaching writing across the disciplines. Our programs inspire students to read and write more and empower students to express their ideas, feelings, and beliefs. We also provide opportunities for students to share their work publically with the larger community. In 2015/2016, Youth Programs served more than 4,000 students with a variety of literary opportunities, including:
• Semester-long writing workshops in high school classrooms (WITS)

• Public student readings at local bookstores and cafés

• Publication of student work in annual print and digital anthologies

• One-day visits by local and world-famous authors

• Mentorships for students to work one-on-one with writers

• Books for classrooms and school libraries

• Transportation, books, and tickets for school groups to attend Portland Arts & Lectures and
