Youth Speaks has a 19-year track record of working with hundreds of thousands of students in the Bay Area alone.
Each year, we offer classroom workshops and all-school assemblies to over 50 Bay Area Middle and High Schools interested in exposing their students to the power of spoken word and poetry.
Our School Visit Program consists of two services:
- Spoken Word Assembly
- Creative Writing Workshop
SPOKEN WORD ASSEMBLY
The 1-hour assemblies are showcase-style and feature some of the most talented spoken word artists in the Bay Area, ranging in age from 16 to 25. All assemblies are appropriate for middle and high schools and can be accompanied with 1-hour theme-based creative writing workshops facilitated by professional Youth Speaks poet mentors.
CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP
We offer a range of creative writing workshops that provide a glimpse into the Youth Speaks process.
BOOK A SCHOOL VISIT
Every year, we offer performances and classroom workshops to over 50 Bay Area Middle and High Schools interested in bringing fun and transformative spoken word presentations to their students. The Youth Speaks School Visit Program consists of two services:
2) Writing & Performance Workshops
Performances: whether school-wide assemblies or intimate classroom readings, these hour-long events feature some of the Bay Area’s most vibrant young artists. Each performance ends by inviting participants to join the school visit team on stage for a student open mic.
Writing and Performance Workshops: our Poet Mentors collaborate with educators to facilitate safe(r) spaces within schools that challenge participants to find, develop, publicly present, and apply their voice. Each 1-1.5 hour workshop features a spectrum of themes and activities, tailored to meet the specific needs of participants.
The Bigger Picture School Visits
Our mission is to end Type 2 diabetes in young people. The Bigger Picture is a collaboration between YOUTH SPEAKS, and the UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO CENTER FOR VULNERABLE POPULATIONS designed to combat the rising epidemic of Type 2 diabetes by empowering youth to change the conversation about the disease, and work to change the social and environmental factors that have led to its spread.
