<p>We are seeking Bay Area-based poets, spoken word artists, emcees, teaching artists, and hip-hop educators who are interested in joining us to help young people find, develop, and share their voice through the written and spoken word.</p>
<p><strong>OPPORTUNITIES</strong><br />
As part of the Youth Speaks poet-mentor team, you will have the opportunity to:</p>
<ul>
<li>Positively impact and empower hundreds of youth across the Bay Area</li>
<li>Receive training and mentorship from nationally acclaimed artists such as Beau Sia, Ishle Yi Park, and Marc Bamuthi Joseph</li>
<li>Be part of the Brave New Voices movement as seen in the recent HBO documentary</li>
<li>Receive class credit (in some cases)</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>POSITION DESCRIPTIONS</strong></p>
<p><strong></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-weight: normal;">School Visit poet: Be part of the Youth Speaks school visit team facilitating Spoken Word assemblies and presentations at high schools throughout the Bay Area.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-weight: normal;">Poet-Mentor: Join our team of talented Poet Mentors in designing and implementing innovative spoken word curriculum in Bay Area classrooms and community centers.</span></li>
</ul>
<p></strong></p>
<p><strong>ELIGIBILITY</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>18 years or older (must not be enrolled in high school)</li>
<li>Spoken word artist (We are also looking for emcees, writers, and performance artists, but our core is spoken word.)</li>
<li>Previous performance experience required</li>
<li>Previous experience with youth preferred</li>
<li>Bi-lingual in Spanish or Cantonese a plus (not required)</li>
<li>Commitment to social justice, educational equity, and positive youth development</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>HOW TO APPLY</strong></p>
<p>To join the team, you must attend the audition on Thursday, July 1, between 4:00-8:00pm. Come prepared to perform 1 piece, and to talk about why you want to work with Youth Speaks.</p>

<p>They will be held at the Youth Speaks office: 1663 Mission St, # 604, San Francisco.</p>

The U.C. Berkeley campus is 5 blocks to the north.</span></h2>

<p>Come witness the skill and power as the top 6 high school poetry slam teams from across the Bay Area perform for the title of Youth Speaks’ Unified District Slam champion!</p>

<p>In  remembrance that your body is a temple, exercise your writing to strengthen  your inner essence.  Build your words fortress strong.  For  all looking to write their world.</p>

<p><strong>Molotov  Mouth </strong>is a slam boot camp designed to turn an open mic performer  into a slam-winning juggernaut. We&#8217;ll attend live shows, discuss strategy  and performance techniques, and discover how to win when you need to.  Taught by HBO Def Jam Poet, Suicide King, Slam Champion, and host of  the largest slam in the Bay Area, Jamie DeWolf.</p>

<p>The  Art of Storytelling is Youth Speaks’ first-ever workshop for Samoan  youth &amp; examines the intersection of self, the City, &amp; the Sacred  Center.  Based in Sunnydale, but open to youth from SoMA, Mission,  Excelsior, Tenderloin, &amp; your block.  Come discover your origin  and build your own mythology.</p>

<p>Before  you rock the mic, you’ll have to find the inner light.  Join  Def Poet and Youth Speaks Artist in Residence Dennis Kim to find how  you move the crowd by stilling the self.  The journey to the Slam  begins with a single breath.</p>

<p>Janice Mirikitani is San Francisco’s second Poet Laureate, appointed in 2000. She and Cecil Williams are often referenced as San Francisco&#8217;s leading activist couple.</p>
