In the corner of the Youth Speaks office, we have built an altar: photos of Oscar Grant, a staff member’s grandmother, a student. It is here where we honor and remember our dead. Over the last few years, our altar has been growing faster than our capacity to grieve. Still, we come together. We make altars. We share stories. This, too, is a part of our healing.
We are reminded each day of the importance of our work. From the sense of hope that a young person creates when they take the stage at Bringing the Noise for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to the first time a young person performs at an Under 21 Open Mic. Our increasingly global community of Brave New Voices continues to grow from the thousands that gathered at Life is Living in West Oakland to our new friends in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Below are just a few of the things we’re up to these days. We hope to connect with you soon.
In peace and poetry,
the Youth Speaks Squad
