School Residencies

School Residencies

Youth Speaks offers short-term and year-long residencies at designated public high schools in Oakland and San Francisco. These workshops are meant to both complement academic rigor and encourage artistic creativity. Within the residency program, Youth Speaks connects a trained Poet Mentor with educators to facilitate in-school writing and performance workshops.

Our short-term residencies (also referred to as “modules”) support each school site within the timeframe of 4-8 weeks. These residencies will include a weekly collaboration with classroom teachers, who are interested in a more customizable fit during a particular time of the year.

Our year-long residencies support each site from August-May and provide weekly workshops. These residencies are meant to provide a deeper dive into Youth Speaks pedagogy, as well as full integration into Youth Speaks programming.

In addition to in-class workshops, all partner schools will receive a kick-off assembly, on-campus programming & field trip opportunities, and professional development resources for teachers.

PEDAGOGY

We believe that the life of the students serves as the primary text for our introductory writing workshops. In this way, we work to draw out the stories of the students before engaging in assigned readings. We have found that as students cultivate and apply their voices they are better equipped to draw enriching parallels between their personal narratives and those of Ernest Hemingway, Richard Wright, Toni Morrison and so on.
