Sean San José is a Director, Writer, Performer and Co-Founder of Campo Santo.
Campo Santo is a multicultural new performances group that gives voice to untold stories through socially relevant world premieres of plays created in long-term processes. Since Campo Santo’s founding in 1996, San José’s body of work spans 50 premiere theatre productions for the group including the first plays by Sharif Abu-Hamdeh, Jimmy Santiago Baca, Jorge Ignacio Cortinas, Junot Diaz, Dave Eggers, Chinaka Hodge, Denis Johnson, Greg Sarris, Luis Saguar, and Vendela Vida.
Campo Santo and San José have developed multiple works by Philip Kan Gotanda, Jessica Hagedorn, Naomi Iizuka, Octavio Solis, John Steppling, Erin Cressida Wilson, and many others. He remains the Program Director for Campo Santo, focused on generating even more of our unheard voices onto to performances stages with text, music, dance, visual arts and more; heads Campo Santo’s Clika- a new writing and performance Lab; and is developing new works with Luis Alfaro, Richard Montoya, Star Finch, Erin Cressida Wilson, Felonious, the Magic Theater, American Conservatory Theatre.
For 15 years Sean San José was the Program Director of the Performance Program at Intersection for the Arts, where he produced and oversaw more than 100 premiere productions of theatre, dance and interdisciplinary performances, working with resident companies the Erika Chong Shuch Performance Project, the Living Word Project and Felonious among the more than 500 artists with whom he collaborated. San José worked under Deborah Cullinan and alongside Kevin B. Chen and Rebeka Rodriguez at Intersection as part of a team that developed new works that crossed boundaries, disciplines and communities.
San José was the Creator and Project Director of Alma Delfina Group- Teatro Contra el SIDA (1994-2002) and Pieces of the Quilt, a collection of more than 50 short plays including original works by Rhodessa Jones, Danny Hoch, Edward Albee, Lanford Wilson, Maria Irene Fornes, David Henry Hwang, Craig Lucas, Tony Kushner, Herbert Siguenza, Migdalia Cruz and many more confronting AIDS.
San José’s recent achievements include: multiple MAP Fund Awards, including a current one (2014-15) for a creation of a new work, Nogales, with Richard Montoya and Joan Osato; commission of new piece for Monstress by American Conservatory Theatre; a current Headland Artist Residency; a current (2014-15) Creative Work Fund recipient with Cutting Ball Theatre for work on and the premiere of his new play with them, Superheroes (November, 2014); he will be directing Colman Domingo’s next new play, Dot, in its New York premiere (2015); this year (2014) he has taught for the University of San Francisco and the University of California at Berkeley; and he is the new Artistic Director of Youth Speaks’ New Performance Program.

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.
